The Central Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFOI) Merinder Mary Attigah-Mensah, has paid a courtesy call on the acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Prof. Denis Aheto.

The visit was to strengthen collaboration between the two institutions and also for ACFOI Attigah-Mensah to formally introduce herself to the University management following her assumption of office as the Regional Commander.

During the meeting, ACFOI Attigah-Mensah underscored the importance of fire safety and urged staff and students to make effective use of fire extinguishers as the first line of response in the event of a fire outbreak before professional firefighters arrive.

She stressed that fire extinguishers were indispensable safety equipment that should be readily available in homes, offices and other workplaces.

As part of efforts to enhance fire safety awareness on campus, ACFOI Attigah-Mensah proposed establishing a Fire Safety Club at UCC.

She explained that the club would educate students about the causes of fires, preventive measures, and basic fire safety practices.

She noted that students trained through the initiative would serve as fire safety ambassadors on campus to help identify and report potential fire hazards while promoting adherence to safety protocols.

Welcoming the Regional Fire Commander and her delegation, Prof. Denis Aheto commended the Ghana National Fire Service for its dedication, professionalism and commitment to safeguarding lives and property in the Central Region.

He expressed appreciation for the continuous fire safety education and training the Service has provided to the University, particularly for safety officers, whose work has contributed significantly to ensuring that University facilities remained safe and compliant with fire safety standards.

Prof. Aheto noted that the safety officers continue to create awareness on fire prevention and support the University in developing and implementing measures to minimise fire risks across campus.

The Vice-Chancellor assured ACFOI Attigah-Mensah that the issues raised during the meeting would receive the necessary attention from the University's management as part of efforts to strengthen campus safety.

Present at the meeting were the Registrar, Gideon Enoch Abbeyquaye, Esq., and a Senior Assistant Registrar at the office of the Ag, VC, Mr. Alfred Ghartey.

ACFOI Attigah-Mensah was accompanied by the Regional Operations Office, DO1 Samuel Kofi Sagoe; Regional Safety Officer, DOI Mustapha Nyarko Hammah; Deputy Regional PRO, DOIII Ebenezer Fiifi Dadzie and LFM John Kwaku Arhin, Aide De Camp of the Regional Commander.
